Our Place Café

During our site visit, we were immediately drawn to the bathroom doors covered in Bemelmans-esque illustrations of musicians playing orchestral instruments. Who did these and why were they here? We’d later learn that local artist Sally Blackwell was commissioned to paint these in the early 00s when the restaurant operated as the Music Cafe. They were so sight-specific and so different that we knew we needed to somehow incorporate them.

One character stood out from the bunch. Nestled in the top left corner of the door was a woman playing the trumpet. Her profile faced right, giving her an air of optimism—like she was looking ahead to whatever came next. A timely coincidence, given that the café is now owned and operated by its first woman, restaurateur Corrie Sid.
